Research brief by Luca Carboni:
A/B
I did not present anything last month and I'm preparing a dense research on these topics:
–overview of the neighborhoods of central Athens and their history/peculiarities;
–overview of the processes of gentrification in different areas of the city centre;
–effects of the planned and executed urban renewal processes on the social and political processes in the city;
–overview of the different interests in governing the emergence out of the crisis;
–production of an online map-tool for the (internal) presenattion and sharing of the results, that can also serve as a platform to share and integrate our researches;
In general the goal of my presentation will be the one of providing the group with a base for understanding the current situation of the city in terms of urban, social and political transformations during the economic crisis, the context in which documenta14 landed; in the coming weeks I will integrate and expand to research.
So far I'm gathering a large number of information from different sources online, and with the help of greek DAI alumni. I do not necessairly need a direct experience of Athens as we as a group don't know so much of that at the moment; I will use the coming days to find suggestions on people to interview in Athens or places to find additional information.
UPDATE: I am gathering a few contacts on the ground, one greek architect/artist that knows about processes of gentrification (possible contact for Athens in January?) and a few more people that know about social movements, migrants, gentrification. I will contact them in the coming days and will report in January.
Possible contacts:
Eleni Tzirzilaki: https://independent.academia.edu/TzirtzilakiEleni – http://nomadikiarxitektoniki.net/en/ Followed documenta14;
Georgia Alexxandri: https://uam.academia.edu/GeorgiaAlexandri Expert on gentrification issues in Athens;
Monia Cappuccini: http://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319641270 we could have access to this PhD thesis about social movements and urban dynamics in Exarchia.
